Contrast therapy at home begins with small heat and cold rituals that build resilience, restore range, and help recovery travel into ordinary life.

A broader view of contrast work: not just colder plunges or hotter saunas, but a steadier relationship with everyday temperature stress.
Beyond the Perfect Protocol
Temperature adaptation begins with a simple question: can you stay present when the world is colder or hotter than you prefer. Formal cold plunges and sauna sessions can serve that capacity well. They teach the body to meet discomfort, stay composed, and return to equilibrium.
Still, the larger practice does not live only in a plunge tub or a cedar room. It lives in the way you meet a cold morning, a hot afternoon, a winter walk, a summer car, a river on a hike. Resilience becomes more useful when it travels with you.
A precise protocol has value. Temperature, duration, timing, and recovery windows can all shape the experience. But when the protocol becomes fragile, the practice starts to narrow. If the day depends on a perfect plunge or a perfect sauna, optimization has replaced adaptation.
Adaptation asks for novelty. The body learns from repetition, then grows efficient inside that repetition. A familiar temperature for a familiar length of time becomes less demanding over time; the system has already learned the pattern. New conditions invite a fuller response.
That is where opportunistic contrast work becomes powerful. A cold waterfall on a hike offers more than cold exposure. It brings fresh air, movement, landscape, and shared presence. The water becomes a ritual because the moment is alive.
We practice contrast therapy to widen capacity, not to decorate a calendar. The point is not to prove toughness or chase discomfort for its own sake. The point is to live with more range, more clarity, and less dependence on ideal conditions.
When you hold that broader frame, every season becomes part of the protocol. Heat and cold stop being interruptions. They become invitations to notice where your body resists, where your mind tightens, and where a small pause restores mastery.
if you're obsessed with optimization then you're missing out on the benefits of adaptation
hey guys today we're going to talk about temperature adaptation temperature adaptation and that's just a fancy term for can and that's just a fancy term for can your body handle being really cold your body handle being really cold and really hot and that sort of thing and really hot and that sort of thing doesn't matter doesn't matter whether you do the sauna in the cold whether you do the sauna in the cold plunge or not doesn't matter plunge or not doesn't matter in fact who i'm really trying to reach in fact who i'm really trying to reach with this with this is people who do that people who do the is people who do that people who do the cold plunging cold plunging a few times a week and sauna use a few a few times a week and sauna use a few times a week times a week my whole point is you're kind of if you my whole point is you're kind of if you just do that you just do that you might be missing the broader perspective might be missing the broader perspective i have found that there are so many i have found that there are so many delicious delicious life enhancing life enriching benefits life enhancing life enriching benefits to looking beyond to looking beyond the formal sauna use and formal cold the formal sauna use and formal cold plunging looking beyond those practices plunging looking beyond those practices and looking at the bigger whole life and looking at the bigger whole life picture picture it just has made my life so delicious it just has made my life so delicious and so enjoyable in the last couple of and so enjoyable in the last couple of years so i wanted to share what i've years so i wanted to share what i've learned learned and again if you don't do those and again if you don't do those practices then you kind of it doesn't practices then you kind of it doesn't apply to you when i'm calling people out apply to you when i'm calling people out for being too rigid about their
for being too rigid about their practices practices and just the rest of the video still and just the rest of the video still applies to you my whole point is applies to you my whole point is with the practices and then i'll try to with the practices and then i'll try to shut up about that shut up about that is i am a huge fan huge fan i'm also is i am a huge fan huge fan i'm also highly opportunistic highly opportunistic about when i can actually do it due to about when i can actually do it due to how convenient how convenient it is to set that up for myself if it is to set that up for myself if there's a time to do that i am so down there's a time to do that i am so down if we are on a hike and there is this if we are on a hike and there is this freezing cold waterfall that goes into a freezing cold waterfall that goes into a kind of river kind of river i'm in that water and i'm gonna get i'm in that water and i'm gonna get really cold and i'm gonna have really cold and i'm gonna have a really good time so being able to be a really good time so being able to be opportunistic about it also just opens opportunistic about it also just opens up you realize up you realize you look for it more and you're just you look for it more and you're just like oh yeah i'm getting in that cold like oh yeah i'm getting in that cold water and i'm gonna have a blast water and i'm gonna have a blast and it's so much more fun when it's in and it's so much more fun when it's in nature and it's with other people nature and it's with other people it's very similar to the way that i it's very similar to the way that i approach the gym where i'm like oh yeah approach the gym where i'm like oh yeah like if it all works out then i am so like if it all works out then i am so down there are so many great things down there are so many great things but at the same time i'm a little bit but at the same time i'm a little bit kind of agnostic about it or ambivalent kind of agnostic about it or ambivalent about it because about it because being super rigidly tied to a routine
being super rigidly tied to a routine and being like oh i can't have a good and being like oh i can't have a good day if i don't get my cold plunge in and day if i don't get my cold plunge in and it has to be at this temperature it has to be at this temperature for this much duration with this big of for this much duration with this big of a break between the two the two dips in a break between the two the two dips in the cold water the cold water or i have to sauna at this temperature or i have to sauna at this temperature at this time of day for this long and it at this time of day for this long and it has to be this spaced out from my has to be this spaced out from my workout workout if you're trying so hard to always be if you're trying so hard to always be dialed into the optimal routine dialed into the optimal routine then you're kind of undermining yourself then you're kind of undermining yourself is all i'm trying to say about the is all i'm trying to say about the practices of doing it formally practices of doing it formally if you're obsessed with optimization if you're obsessed with optimization then you're missing out on the benefits then you're missing out on the benefits of of adaptation of actually adapting to adaptation of actually adapting to something new something new because if you have a certain routine at because if you have a certain routine at a certain temperature your body's going a certain temperature your body's going to get so good at it to get so good at it that you're no longer really adapting to that you're no longer really adapting to anything new your body is totally used anything new your body is totally used to that routine to that routine so if we focus rather than on optimizing so if we focus rather than on optimizing our daily routine and everything our daily routine and everything if instead we focus on in my life if instead we focus on in my life can i adapt to different temperatures can i adapt to different temperatures just different ambient temperatures in just different ambient temperatures in the situation i'm in can i just happily
the situation i'm in can i just happily live and thrive on a day where it's live and thrive on a day where it's colder outside or a day where it's colder outside or a day where it's excessively hot outside excessively hot outside that's the real question and that is the that's the real question and that is the point of this video point of this video i've found so much joy and i don't know i've found so much joy and i don't know physical wellness it's not just wellness physical wellness it's not just wellness i just i just very very happily have found that very very happily have found that just by paying attention to it just by just by paying attention to it just by being conscious of it being conscious of it i am able to adapt to a lot of different i am able to adapt to a lot of different temperature situations in my life temperature situations in my life no big deal it is easier to do what i'm no big deal it is easier to do what i'm about to say about to say if you already are into the whole idea if you already are into the whole idea of temperature adaptation if you're a of temperature adaptation if you're a cold plunger and a sauna user cold plunger and a sauna user then your body is probably a little bit then your body is probably a little bit better at being uncomfortable when it better at being uncomfortable when it comes to temperatures comes to temperatures but that being said maybe the sauna is but that being said maybe the sauna is too much for you because there there are too much for you because there there are times when it's not appropriate and the times when it's not appropriate and the sauna is too much but maybe the things sauna is too much but maybe the things i'm saying here that are gentler i'm saying here that are gentler are better and maybe the cold punch are better and maybe the cold punch is currently too much for you or it's
is currently too much for you or it's currently not an option that's available currently not an option that's available to you there is nothing to you there is nothing there's no convenient way to set up a there's no convenient way to set up a cold plunge for yourself for whatever cold plunge for yourself for whatever reason reason but maybe you can do the gentler option but maybe you can do the gentler option of when it's cold outside of when it's cold outside go out and check your mail and come back go out and check your mail and come back inside without a coat on inside without a coat on just do little things throughout your just do little things throughout your day just paying a little more attention day just paying a little more attention to to temperature adaptation in smaller ways temperature adaptation in smaller ways there is there is this huge world of benefit that you can this huge world of benefit that you can just bite into that you can just just bite into that you can just enjoy in your life and if everything in enjoy in your life and if everything in your life is just centered around your life is just centered around optimizing your formal routine optimizing your formal routine then unfortunately sometimes we get to then unfortunately sometimes we get to this place where this place where we're very happily jumping into really we're very happily jumping into really cold water and very happily sitting in a cold water and very happily sitting in a sauna and sweating it out and being very sauna and sweating it out and being very uncomfortable but then we go back to our uncomfortable but then we go back to our daily life daily life and for a majority of the hours out of and for a majority of the hours out of every day and every day every week every day and every day every week and every week every month we are and every week every month we are living indoors and if it's hot outside living indoors and if it's hot outside we just flip on the air conditioning we just flip on the air conditioning because we don't want to be because we don't want to be uncomfortable and if it's really cold uncomfortable and if it's really cold outside outside then we turn the heat way up and if we
then we turn the heat way up and if we don't want to be cold and we put on a don't want to be cold and we put on a billion sweatshirts and we take a really billion sweatshirts and we take a really warm bath and we just do not want to warm bath and we just do not want to handle being cold handle being cold and again when it's hot outside and we and again when it's hot outside and we just cannot tolerate not being in an just cannot tolerate not being in an air-conditioned location it's kind of air-conditioned location it's kind of limiting limiting what you can enjoyably do for example what you can enjoyably do for example how much you can enjoy how much you can enjoy life in the summer without the ac and life in the summer without the ac and often we do find ourselves in often we do find ourselves in whether we're traveling or whether whether we're traveling or whether there's a place where the ac is broken there's a place where the ac is broken all of a sudden we're super limited at all of a sudden we're super limited at how much how many scenarios we can how much how many scenarios we can actually actually enjoy until we get the ac back and in enjoy until we get the ac back and in the winter we can really be limited on the winter we can really be limited on how much how much we can enjoy the outdoors because we're we can enjoy the outdoors because we're just so worried about staying warm so we just so worried about staying warm so we just want to stay in our house all the just want to stay in our house all the time time context of course so i'm not listen context of course so i'm not listen i've never lived in alberta during the i've never lived in alberta during the winter winter context but many of us live in a context but many of us live in a latitude where most of the seasons you latitude where most of the seasons you can do can do some amount of just adapting to the some amount of just adapting to the outdoors even in the extreme outdoors even in the extreme seasons definitely where i'm at it's
seasons definitely where i'm at it's about about living in a way that your body evolved living in a way that your body evolved to live to live our bodies were adapted to do many our bodies were adapted to do many things the human body things the human body is meant to walk long distances we have is meant to walk long distances we have feet that are feet that are made to support our weight for us to made to support our weight for us to stand upright and walk long distances stand upright and walk long distances that's why we don't have the same type that's why we don't have the same type of feet as orangutans of feet as orangutans because they're supposed to be climbing because they're supposed to be climbing with their feet and swinging and hanging with their feet and swinging and hanging we walk we're walkers so you can make we walk we're walkers so you can make the argument and look into our structure the argument and look into our structure and prove that so same thing with and prove that so same thing with temperature adaptation our body temperature adaptation our body is made to do certain things you have is made to do certain things you have these tiny little muscles these tiny little muscles in your skin layer that help you do in your skin layer that help you do goosebumps when you're really cold and goosebumps when you're really cold and you have the ability to get you have the ability to get really really hot in a really hot really really hot in a really hot environment and for your core body environment and for your core body temperature to rise temperature to rise and then your body thermoregulates and then your body thermoregulates itself back down to a nice itself back down to a nice cool level we have all these abilities cool level we have all these abilities to survive in many different habitats to survive in many different habitats i'm not saying to take it to extremes i'm not saying to take it to extremes that would cause death that would cause death context people so i'm not talking about
context people so i'm not talking about your body your body i'm not saying go out and try to get so i'm not saying go out and try to get so cold that there are certain functions cold that there are certain functions that shut down as your body slowly dies that shut down as your body slowly dies i'm not trying to say that and you know i'm not trying to say that and you know when you get too hot or too cold because when you get too hot or too cold because you literally get you literally get sick and things stop working so i'm not sick and things stop working so i'm not talking about that talking about that but my only point is this isn't about but my only point is this isn't about proving yourself to anybody proving yourself to anybody or proving your toughness although i or proving your toughness although i will say there is some mental toughness will say there is some mental toughness that will come that will come with this but it's not about that it is with this but it's not about that it is about i think about i think being able to really live into all these being able to really live into all these moments moments that maybe before you were conscious that maybe before you were conscious about temperature adaptation about temperature adaptation you just could not go do that enjoyably you just could not go do that enjoyably so it's like so it's like a hot summer day are you just stuck a hot summer day are you just stuck where there's ac where there's ac because you cannot be comfortable when because you cannot be comfortable when you're outside on that hot summer day so you're outside on that hot summer day so you're just going to stay indoors in the you're just going to stay indoors in the ac ac and not participate in the things that and not participate in the things that you could have you could have or vice versa when it's cold outside are or vice versa when it's cold outside are you fully you fully an indoor creature in the winter because
an indoor creature in the winter because you don't want to adapt you don't want to adapt to the outside within reason to the outside within reason these things affect us a lot because if these things affect us a lot because if you want to you want to remain where there is either heat or ac remain where there is either heat or ac then you're not getting all those other then you're not getting all those other things that i talk about on this channel things that i talk about on this channel like like viewing long distances having your eye viewing long distances having your eye focus in really far away which is really focus in really far away which is really good for your eyesight good for your eyesight save you some money on eyeglasses and save you some money on eyeglasses and eye doctor visits and contacts and eye doctor visits and contacts and everything everything and you're not getting sunlight not only and you're not getting sunlight not only the blue light that comes into your eye the blue light that comes into your eye that helps regulate your circadian that helps regulate your circadian rhythm but also sunlight rhythm but also sunlight on your skin you know these bioactive on your skin you know these bioactive things that are in sunlight that go into things that are in sunlight that go into your skin for with conscientious your skin for with conscientious sun exposure and you're not getting sun exposure and you're not getting whatever fresh air whatever fresh air movement walking hiking climbing the movement walking hiking climbing the social things that happen social things that happen outdoors the soundscape of nature outdoors the soundscape of nature you know your ears getting used to all you know your ears getting used to all different sounds at all different different sounds at all different distances instead of just using distances instead of just using earphones you know so there's so much earphones you know so there's so much great about being outside
great about being outside and you are limited how much you can and you are limited how much you can handle handle being outside for certain durations or being outside for certain durations or with certain frequency so with certain frequency so maybe you can be outside but never for maybe you can be outside but never for longer than half an hour or maybe you longer than half an hour or maybe you can be outside but you can can be outside but you can really only do it once a week so this is really only do it once a week so this is all about being able to all about being able to up the quantity of time that you enjoy up the quantity of time that you enjoy being outside not just tolerate being outside not just tolerate enjoy so here's some examples this has enjoy so here's some examples this has two different types of benefits number two different types of benefits number one is just that it's going to one is just that it's going to make you more resilient and able to just make you more resilient and able to just live in the moment when you need to be live in the moment when you need to be outside on a really hot day or a really outside on a really hot day or a really cold day cold day but then secondly it makes you less but then secondly it makes you less dependent on your formal dependent on your formal cold plunging or sauna routine because cold plunging or sauna routine because maybe there are times when you can't maybe there are times when you can't afford afford you can't afford your own sauna and you you can't afford your own sauna and you can't afford to go the gym or i know can't afford to go the gym or i know that in my state i would use this that in my state i would use this gym sauna cause i can't afford my own gym sauna cause i can't afford my own and they still haven't opened up they've and they still haven't opened up they've been closed since march and they still been closed since march and they still haven't opened up there is no sauna haven't opened up there is no sauna option option and so are you just going to crumble is and so are you just going to crumble is your mental and physical health going to
your mental and physical health going to crumble when you don't have crumble when you don't have your formal routine or maybe cold your formal routine or maybe cold plunging is less available to you on a plunging is less available to you on a day-to-day basis day-to-day basis so if your routine goes away or if it's so if your routine goes away or if it's still just not an still just not an option and you've never tried it these option and you've never tried it these are ways to be are ways to be able to afford to be a little more able to afford to be a little more agnostic agnostic about whether you have to have the about whether you have to have the formal routine all the time because formal routine all the time because again we're not just trying to dial in again we're not just trying to dial in our rigid our rigid daily routine so that we have to have it daily routine so that we have to have it that way every day this is all about that way every day this is all about actually being able to adapt and be actually being able to adapt and be flexible and go with the flow flexible and go with the flow so i'm just simply going to list some of so i'm just simply going to list some of the things that i do the things that i do just the little shifts that i've made just the little shifts that i've made through through simple consciousness through simple simple consciousness through simple awareness the little shifts that i've awareness the little shifts that i've made made and then how that has changed the big and then how that has changed the big picture for me picture for me so number one is just at the end of a so number one is just at the end of a shower unless i'm about to go to bed if shower unless i'm about to go to bed if it's it's if it's kind of a shower that you're if it's kind of a shower that you're taking to wind down at night taking to wind down at night then by all means heat up your core body then by all means heat up your core body temperature without doing temperature without doing cold water in the shower because then as cold water in the shower because then as your body cools itself down before bed your body cools itself down before bed you'll actually level out to even cooler
you'll actually level out to even cooler and you want your core body temperature and you want your core body temperature nice and low nice and low so that's great to you know get really so that's great to you know get really really warm in the shower if it's a really warm in the shower if it's a couple hours before bed couple hours before bed but if it's morning or midday or but if it's morning or midday or afternoon at the end of shower afternoon at the end of shower i'll just turn it all the way cold as i'll just turn it all the way cold as cold as it'll go and really embrace it cold as it'll go and really embrace it not just not just let put your calf not just not just let put your calf and your knee in the cold water put your and your knee in the cold water put your whole self in it and make sure you get whole self in it and make sure you get front and back and arm down and arm up front and back and arm down and arm up and just really really and just really really expose yourself to that cold water until expose yourself to that cold water until it no longer feels cold to you it no longer feels cold to you this is also just a very gentle cold this is also just a very gentle cold plunge and so plunge and so if jumping into really cold water if jumping into really cold water doesn't sound very appealing to you then doesn't sound very appealing to you then maybe you could master the cold plunge maybe you could master the cold plunge shower which is that shower which is that i started out just 20 seconds can you i started out just 20 seconds can you just just get all the surfaces of your body with get all the surfaces of your body with that cold shower water for 20 seconds that cold shower water for 20 seconds and then most of the research about cold and then most of the research about cold showers is the full showers is the full five minutes but don't worry about it i five minutes but don't worry about it i mean i find that the water in my shower mean i find that the water in my shower at least in this season at least in this season it doesn't get cold enough that there's
it doesn't get cold enough that there's that big of a difference between one that big of a difference between one minute or five minutes because minute or five minutes because by the time i reach one minute in the by the time i reach one minute in the cold shower my body has already fully cold shower my body has already fully adapted to it and it no longer feels adapted to it and it no longer feels that cold to me that cold to me whereas sometimes in really cold water whereas sometimes in really cold water if i'm fully submerged if i'm fully submerged it really does take five minutes for it really does take five minutes for your body to actually your body to actually react and adapt to everything so never react and adapt to everything so never overthink the cold shower overthink the cold shower just turn the water to cold at the end just turn the water to cold at the end get everything get all the surfaces of get everything get all the surfaces of your body maybe stay longer maybe just your body maybe stay longer maybe just do 20 seconds and then turn it off do 20 seconds and then turn it off see if that makes any difference in the see if that makes any difference in the rest of your day but then after the rest of your day but then after the shower shower we have this habit of towel drying we have this habit of towel drying ourselves off and then immediately you ourselves off and then immediately you know having a hoodie and know having a hoodie and just covering up and staying warm can just covering up and staying warm can you air dry your skin you air dry your skin your skin just smaller structures in your skin just smaller structures in your skin and those tiny muscles that your skin and those tiny muscles that make make goosebumps when you're cold your skin goosebumps when you're cold your skin will go through all this adaptation and will go through all this adaptation and extra blood flow extra blood flow extra life will come to your skin if you extra life will come to your skin if you just air dry after you shower
just air dry after you shower so unless it's really late at night when so unless it's really late at night when i want to be in a kind of different i want to be in a kind of different state state then after a shower i'll not only air then after a shower i'll not only air dry i'll embrace the discomfort of air dry i'll embrace the discomfort of air drying i will turn on drying i will turn on the ceiling fan at the highest level so the ceiling fan at the highest level so that it is really moving the air around that it is really moving the air around in the room in the room and it's really at first uncomfortable and it's really at first uncomfortable which is great because which is great because it's the whole comfortably uncomfortable it's the whole comfortably uncomfortable thing it's how much discomfort can you thing it's how much discomfort can you just happily tolerate let your skin go just happily tolerate let your skin go through all that after through all that after you take a shower instead of just you take a shower instead of just wrapping yourself up in a warm towel wrapping yourself up in a warm towel and of course context it depends on the and of course context it depends on the day you're having if you need that warm day you're having if you need that warm towel for towel for some reason then do it but just in some reason then do it but just in general with your routine we don't think general with your routine we don't think about all the opportunities that we have about all the opportunities that we have to adapt to temperature now i'll give to adapt to temperature now i'll give you an example with heat you an example with heat generally we get into the car and if generally we get into the car and if it's a hot day we'll just it's a hot day we'll just flip up the ac at full blast so that we flip up the ac at full blast so that we can cool down can cool down now of course if you're going to go do now of course if you're going to go do public speaking public speaking or whatever if you're going to be in or whatever if you're going to be in front of a crowd and you don't want to
front of a crowd and you don't want to be glistening with be glistening with sweat then of course you know sweat then of course you know refrigerate that car refrigerate that car make yourself nice and cool to preserve make yourself nice and cool to preserve you know your face you know your face whatever but generally you don't have to whatever but generally you don't have to be that worried about looking sweaty be that worried about looking sweaty and so sometimes i'll get into the car and so sometimes i'll get into the car habitually turn on the ac because it's habitually turn on the ac because it's hot out these days hot out these days and i'm like wait the saunas are closed and i'm like wait the saunas are closed but i can adapt but i can adapt to the temperature of my car without the to the temperature of my car without the ac ac on there is such thing as too much if on there is such thing as too much if you're not adapted you're not adapted to even smaller things but at the level to even smaller things but at the level that i'm at that i'm at of oh yeah i've had years of sauna in of oh yeah i've had years of sauna in and hiking and hiking outdoors on a really hot day and outdoors on a really hot day and everything so everything so don't give yourself heat exhaustion but don't give yourself heat exhaustion but when i stay in my car when i stay in my car and drive around without the ac on in and drive around without the ac on in july july i don't get heat exhaustion i just you i don't get heat exhaustion i just you know the sweat starts rolling down and know the sweat starts rolling down and i'm i'm pretty uncomfortably hot but that is the pretty uncomfortably hot but that is the sauna
sauna you have a sauna in your car in july and you have a sauna in your car in july and we never think of using it we just turn we never think of using it we just turn on the ac so that we never have to be on the ac so that we never have to be uncomfortable but as long as you're not uncomfortable but as long as you're not heading to a formal event that you don't heading to a formal event that you don't want to be sweaty for can you just leave want to be sweaty for can you just leave the ac off and adapt to the sauna of the ac off and adapt to the sauna of your car and it's usually just a mini your car and it's usually just a mini session it's not going to be as long or session it's not going to be as long or as sweaty as a sauna session as sweaty as a sauna session but those little things really add up but those little things really add up in back to the cold plunging the in back to the cold plunging the cryotherapy thing there is cryotherapy cryotherapy thing there is cryotherapy just in just in checking the mail in the winter can you checking the mail in the winter can you go outside in the winter without a coat go outside in the winter without a coat on just to make it to the mailbox if on just to make it to the mailbox if it's nearby it's nearby and then come back from checking the and then come back from checking the mail now you've just maybe spent you mail now you've just maybe spent you know a minute know a minute of being uncomfortably cold and your of being uncomfortably cold and your body adapted to that quick burst of cold body adapted to that quick burst of cold and it's like a workout for your immune and it's like a workout for your immune system to just system to just adapt to some uncomfortable coldness adapt to some uncomfortable coldness and then that being said if you already and then that being said if you already have way too many stressors on your have way too many stressors on your immune system immune system way too many stressors on your system way too many stressors on your system you need to look into all that before you need to look into all that before you take all this advice
you take all this advice but in general if you're healthy and you but in general if you're healthy and you already already are interested in this kind of thing are interested in this kind of thing then don't always worry about then don't always worry about setting up the perfect cold plunge setting up the perfect cold plunge scenario can you just handle scenario can you just handle you know going outside in the winter you know going outside in the winter with a reasonable amount of winter gear with a reasonable amount of winter gear on instead of having to on instead of having to bundle up so much that you don't even bundle up so much that you don't even feel what it's like outside feel what it's like outside just being opportunistic about it and just being opportunistic about it and always thinking wait do i have to turn always thinking wait do i have to turn on the ac do i have to turn the heat up on the ac do i have to turn the heat up do i have to bundle up so much do i have to bundle up so much if i just ask myself these questions my if i just ask myself these questions my point is normally in modern life point is normally in modern life we don't think about it everywhere that we don't think about it everywhere that we're at we're at is climate controlled so we never have is climate controlled so we never have to adapt to to adapt to an ambient temperature that's that an ambient temperature that's that different from any other time of the different from any other time of the year year and so we are in our car that's climate and so we are in our car that's climate controlled and then we go into a public controlled and then we go into a public space that's climate controlled space that's climate controlled and then we come home and our home is and then we come home and our home is climate controlled and often to climate controlled and often to excess where in the winter we don't have excess where in the winter we don't have to turn the heat up maybe to survive you
to turn the heat up maybe to survive you have to turn the heat up right maybe you have to turn the heat up right maybe you live in a place where to survive you live in a place where to survive you have to turn the heat up have to turn the heat up but maybe we don't have to turn it that but maybe we don't have to turn it that high up high up you know maybe you can just bring it up you know maybe you can just bring it up to survival level and not go to survival level and not go all the way to the point where it's all the way to the point where it's drying out your eyes drying out your eyes and your you know your it's affecting and your you know your it's affecting your breathing and everything because your breathing and everything because your house is so your house is so overheated especially at nighttime but overheated especially at nighttime but then when it comes to cooling then when it comes to cooling the number one thing that i find with the number one thing that i find with cooling is that people in the summer cooling is that people in the summer just just cannot deal if there's not ac oh the ac cannot deal if there's not ac oh the ac is broken i'm dead is broken i'm dead and then weirdly ironically then they'll and then weirdly ironically then they'll complain because they'll go somewhere complain because they'll go somewhere where the ac where the ac is too good and they can't handle being is too good and they can't handle being they're shivering and they're like oh they're shivering and they're like oh i'm so uncomfortable i can't have a good i'm so uncomfortable i can't have a good time time and it's just really hard to like be in and it's just really hard to like be in the moment and enjoy your life if the moment and enjoy your life if you go from being like oh i can't handle you go from being like oh i can't handle being outside today it's such a hot day being outside today it's such a hot day outside i cannot handle this outside i cannot handle this and then you go indoors i cannot handle and then you go indoors i cannot handle how cold i am i'm so uncomfortable how cold i am i'm so uncomfortable it's really unpleasant and it's really unpleasant and even when it comes to the health freaks
even when it comes to the health freaks who research who research what's the optimal temperature to sleep what's the optimal temperature to sleep in if you are in if you are so insistent on optimizing everything so insistent on optimizing everything then you're looking at a study that's then you're looking at a study that's like the human body should always sleep like the human body should always sleep at between 64 and 68 degrees at between 64 and 68 degrees and it should always be like this when and it should always be like this when you're sleeping but then it just kind of you're sleeping but then it just kind of sometimes i take a step back from that sometimes i take a step back from that and i'm like okay yeah and i'm like okay yeah but the deal is are human bodies always but the deal is are human bodies always always always is it a requirement for always always is it a requirement for the human body the human body to sleep at that exact temperature year to sleep at that exact temperature year round no matter the climate round no matter the climate no matter your latitude that you're no matter your latitude that you're living at no matter anything are we just living at no matter anything are we just built to be so delicate as to only be built to be so delicate as to only be able to sleep healthily at able to sleep healthily at that exact temperature range and i think that exact temperature range and i think no way because if we were built to adapt no way because if we were built to adapt to many situations in nature then we are to many situations in nature then we are probably built to sleep probably built to sleep at many different temperatures as well at many different temperatures as well and so now i'm just going to get into and so now i'm just going to get into the things that i've noticed from this
the things that i've noticed from this kind of kind of awareness number one is our ac got awareness number one is our ac got broken broken and i was so okay any other time in my and i was so okay any other time in my life life if the ac was broken i was miserable if the ac was broken i was miserable it's like oh i can't focus i'm so tired it's like oh i can't focus i'm so tired and sweaty and sweaty i'm so uncomfortable like there's no i'm so uncomfortable like there's no escape from the heat escape from the heat but when our ic broke about a month ago but when our ic broke about a month ago i was okay and even at night despite all i was okay and even at night despite all these health books that are insisting these health books that are insisting you must optimize your sleep temperature you must optimize your sleep temperature it must be like this it must be like this at night it we were kind of at night it we were kind of uncomfortably warm at night uncomfortably warm at night just from the air and you know no just from the air and you know no blankets or anything to add to it blankets or anything to add to it but i adapted to it really well i just but i adapted to it really well i just slept in the heat and i was like you slept in the heat and i was like you know if you lived in a really hot know if you lived in a really hot climate it would feel like this every climate it would feel like this every single night single night are humans made to live that yeah we are are humans made to live that yeah we are made to live in hot climates where it's made to live in hot climates where it's warm even when we're sleeping warm even when we're sleeping and so i adapted to that totally well and so i adapted to that totally well and then of course once the ac came back and then of course once the ac came back on then i go back to my health book on then i go back to my health book temperature oh it must be between temperature oh it must be between it must be at 67 degrees exactly but the it must be at 67 degrees exactly but the fact of the matter is i didn't mind when
fact of the matter is i didn't mind when the ac was broken it didn't affect my the ac was broken it didn't affect my productivity productivity or my happiness or my level of comfort or my happiness or my level of comfort at all i didn't mind at all at all i didn't mind at all and that was very freeing to realize and that was very freeing to realize that made me feel tougher that made me feel tougher but it's not about proving your but it's not about proving your toughness it's just when you realize toughness it's just when you realize that your body can adapt to so many that your body can adapt to so many different things different things than people would normally think it just than people would normally think it just kind of opens up many different kind of opens up many different possibilities so a few more examples possibilities so a few more examples last summer we took a trip to the east last summer we took a trip to the east coast during coast during record heat and we were doing some record heat and we were doing some historical sightseeing baby sexy and we historical sightseeing baby sexy and we went to went to mount vernon and at mount vernon mount vernon and at mount vernon we had signed up to take this sort of we had signed up to take this sort of virtual reality tour where you get these virtual reality tour where you get these vr little headset things vr little headset things and they can show you previous and they can show you previous structures that had existed on the land structures that had existed on the land before but they're like projecting it so before but they're like projecting it so that you can see it in vr that you can see it in vr in the space that it used to be in it in the space that it used to be in it was was so record-breakingly hot that day in so record-breakingly hot that day in mount vernon mount vernon in july of 2019 that
in july of 2019 that the vr headsets could not function in the vr headsets could not function in the heat the heat the horses could not come outside for the horses could not come outside for this demonstration that they would do this demonstration that they would do they would kind of show you this thing they would kind of show you this thing they would do with horses they would do with horses the horses could not go outside it was the horses could not go outside it was so hot so hot everyone was melting everyone was everyone was melting everyone was running for the little visitor center running for the little visitor center museum things that had air conditioning museum things that had air conditioning in the restaurants and the bathrooms in the restaurants and the bathrooms everyone was complaining and i everyone was complaining and i enjoyed mount vernon walking around enjoyed mount vernon walking around no shoes too and of course the there are no shoes too and of course the there are certain types of materials if it was certain types of materials if it was like the road like the road then i'd have to run across it to get to then i'd have to run across it to get to something that didn't get so hot in the something that didn't get so hot in the sun because it was sun because it was record-breakingly hot but all i'm saying record-breakingly hot but all i'm saying is everyone in my group and everyone is everyone in my group and everyone all the tourists there we're just all the tourists there we're just melting and i need to buy another melting and i need to buy another gatorade and let's just gatorade and let's just let's just go to the museum let's not go let's just go to the museum let's not go explore all the grounds explore all the grounds and i just felt free to roam and i was and i just felt free to roam and i was never uncomfortably never uncomfortably hot at all i registered you know i'm hot at all i registered you know i'm very very i sensed very clearly that it was very i sensed very clearly that it was very hot outside
hot outside but i didn't feel overheated i didn't but i didn't feel overheated i didn't feel too hot feel too hot and so other than when the road that and so other than when the road that heats up so much that you have if you're heats up so much that you have if you're not wearing shoes you have to just not wearing shoes you have to just run across it other than that i felt run across it other than that i felt like no limitations i was just having like no limitations i was just having a ball i was having a great time and a ball i was having a great time and soaking in every little thing and soaking in every little thing and walking around to every little place walking around to every little place and enjoying the freedom because during and enjoying the freedom because during that whole trip i could never take my that whole trip i could never take my shoes off till that day and no one shoes off till that day and no one yelled at me and yelled at me and i was just having a really good time so i was just having a really good time so the idea is you'll get to a point if the idea is you'll get to a point if you're always taking opportunities to you're always taking opportunities to adapt to different temperatures that adapt to different temperatures that you'll register you'll register one day when it's really hot you'll one day when it's really hot you'll register that it's hot but you don't register that it's hot but you don't feel so hot that you can't function or feel so hot that you can't function or you'll register in the winter that it's you'll register in the winter that it's cold but you aren't cold you know what i cold but you aren't cold you know what i mean because there are days sometimes mean because there are days sometimes especially as a young adult or as a late especially as a young adult or as a late adolescent there would be days in the adolescent there would be days in the summer that i could not warm up summer that i could not warm up so even though it was really hot outside so even though it was really hot outside going outside working out going outside working out eating you know trying to eat to raise
eating you know trying to eat to raise my you know my thermogenesis in my body my you know my thermogenesis in my body nothing nothing could warm me up taking nothing nothing could warm me up taking hot shower and so it was a day in july hot shower and so it was a day in july and i could not warm up my body my body and i could not warm up my body my body could not generate enough heat i was could not generate enough heat i was just just cold and so then that gets much worse if cold and so then that gets much worse if it's really cold outside and you already it's really cold outside and you already feel really cold feel really cold so this is like the opposite where your so this is like the opposite where your body in this body in this winter is just generating tons of heat winter is just generating tons of heat and you're just and you're just happy as a clam and so you go outside happy as a clam and so you go outside and you register that it's cold and you register that it's cold you even feel that slight crisp you even feel that slight crisp discomfort and you feel yourself discomfort and you feel yourself adapting to it and then adapting to it and then you know you make it back indoors before you know you make it back indoors before you're gonna have some sort of problem you're gonna have some sort of problem you know like your fingers getting so you know like your fingers getting so cold that they stop cold that they stop having mobility you don't want that but having mobility you don't want that but it's just being outside and registering it's just being outside and registering that the temperature is a certain way that the temperature is a certain way without being so without being so bothered by it or so affected by it bothered by it or so affected by it lastly i just noticed people lastly i just noticed people are just so unhappy for so much of the are just so unhappy for so much of the time time and they're like it's like whatever late and they're like it's like whatever late fall and they're just like it is so fall and they're just like it is so unbearably cold and i go outside and i'm
unbearably cold and i go outside and i'm like like objectively speaking it is not like objectively speaking it is not like dangerous for a human body it is not dangerous for a human body it is not actually that cold outside it's like actually that cold outside it's like brisk brisk outside and people are miserable and outside and people are miserable and they're wearing all the sweaters and they're wearing all the sweaters and they're turning the heat up in the house they're turning the heat up in the house and then the heat gets to a certain and then the heat gets to a certain point and they're uncomfortably hot and point and they're uncomfortably hot and they're like oh i'm so hot they're like oh i'm so hot and they're just never comfortable and and they're just never comfortable and they can never get to that like they can never get to that like goldilocks place very often and so goldilocks place very often and so they're constantly they're constantly they're constantly complaining because they're constantly complaining because they're constantly uncomfortable i'm not they're constantly uncomfortable i'm not holding against them for complaining holding against them for complaining because it is very miserable to because it is very miserable to always feel like i have to have the always feel like i have to have the optimal temperature around me or i can't optimal temperature around me or i can't focus i can't be happy i can't feel focus i can't be happy i can't feel functional functional i can't be comfortable so this is like i can't be comfortable so this is like the opposite of that where the opposite of that where you get so much freedom the more that you get so much freedom the more that you work on being flexible and adapting you work on being flexible and adapting to many temperatures to many temperatures you just live your life and sometimes you just live your life and sometimes you have little moments of pride where you have little moments of pride where you're like wow i don't you're like wow i don't everyone is saying how cold it is and i everyone is saying how cold it is and i just don't feel that cold and just don't feel that cold and i'm not talking about having some sort
i'm not talking about having some sort of psychotic break of psychotic break and freezing to death you know so that and freezing to death you know so that you have the same you have the same death as the guy in the shining i'm not death as the guy in the shining i'm not talking about that talking about that i'm just saying there are times where i'm just saying there are times where it's really not that cold but to it's really not that cold but to everybody else everybody else who just always has to have it optimized who just always has to have it optimized for them it is very cold to them they for them it is very cold to them they perceive that as very uncomfortable and perceive that as very uncomfortable and you'll just have these moments where you'll just have these moments where you're just like man i'm you're just like man i'm not uncomfortable at all i feel really not uncomfortable at all i feel really breezy breezy and i just want to go talk to people and and i just want to go talk to people and explore and move and you just feel so explore and move and you just feel so free and same thing with the heat where free and same thing with the heat where in the summer you'll just in the summer you'll just you're just soaking in those sun rays you're just soaking in those sun rays and you're soaking in your surroundings and you're soaking in your surroundings and you're enjoying the outdoors and and you're enjoying the outdoors and you're not uncomfortable even though you're not uncomfortable even though it's a hot day it's a hot day so little meaningful intentional doses so little meaningful intentional doses of discomfort can lead to you being the of discomfort can lead to you being the most most comfortable person in the room thank you comfortable person in the room thank you for watching

Modern Comfort Narrows the Range
Modern life makes discomfort optional. We move from climate-controlled homes to climate-controlled cars to climate-controlled public spaces, often without meeting the actual season for more than a few seconds. Convenience is useful; constant insulation has a cost.
When heat becomes intolerable, summer shrinks. You stay near air conditioning, shorten time outdoors, and plan life around escape from warmth. When cold becomes intolerable, winter narrows in the same way. The outdoors becomes something to endure, not inhabit.
The body is built to thermoregulate within reason. It can warm, cool, sweat, shiver, raise goosebumps, and bring core temperature back toward balance. Those responses support presence, clarity, and steady participation in real conditions. They need practice to stay available.
This does not mean ignoring context. Extreme cold, dangerous heat, illness, exhaustion, and compromised health all change the equation. A deliberate protocol respects the boundary between productive discomfort and harm. Safety gives the practice its intelligence.
Within those boundaries, temperature resilience opens more of life. You can spend longer outside, walk farther, join friends, hike, climb, move, and receive daylight without negotiating every moment with the weather. The reward is not just tolerance. It is participation.
Outdoor time carries its own quiet benefits. Long views rest the eyes. Sunlight helps anchor the rhythm of the day. Fresh air, natural sound, and ordinary movement restore a sense of scale. Temperature capacity protects access to those essentials.
i just felt free to roam
We all know the moment when the body starts bargaining. It wants the heat higher, the air colder, the jacket heavier, the discomfort gone. The practice begins in that pause. You ask whether comfort is necessary, or simply habitual.
That question changes the day. You stop treating every shift in temperature as a problem to solve. You begin to sense the season with more precision, and the body remembers that it was designed for more than one setting.
Small Exposures Become a Practice
Small exposures build the foundation. You do not need perfect equipment to begin. A shower, a doorway, a mailbox, a parked car, or a few minutes of moving air can become a clean temperature ritual. The ordinary day has range.
A cold finish to a morning or midday shower is one of the simplest entry points. Turn the water cold, place the whole body under it, and let the front, back, arms, and legs meet the sensation. Twenty seconds can be enough to begin.
The point is not to perform endurance. It is to stay present long enough for the first shock to soften. When the water no longer feels as sharp, you have witnessed adaptation in real time. That small reset can carry into the rest of the day.
Night has a different rhythm. A warm shower before bed can help the body settle as it cools afterward, supporting a lower core temperature for sleep. That distinction matters. A refined protocol serves the moment you are in.
After a shower, air drying offers another gentle exposure. Instead of rushing into a towel and heavy layers, let the skin meet the room. The small structures that create goosebumps respond to cold, and extra blood flow reaches the skin; you feel more awake, vivid, and resilient.
A fan can amplify the practice when the conditions are appropriate. Moving air turns a familiar bathroom into a precise, brief cold exposure. It is uncomfortable at first, then manageable. That transition is the training.
Heat offers the same opportunity. On a hot day, the automatic move is to start the car and flood it with air conditioning. When it is safe, and when you are not preserving a polished appearance for an event, you can leave the air conditioning off for a short drive.
The car is not a replacement for a sauna, and it deserves respect. Heat can become dangerous when the dose is wrong or the person is not ready. But a brief, conscious exposure to warmth can train composure without requiring a facility, membership, or perfect schedule.
Winter brings its own micro-practices. Walk to the mailbox without a coat when the distance is short and the conditions are reasonable. Step outside for a minute before adding every layer. Let the body feel cold, adapt, and return.
These small moments accumulate. They make temperature work less dependent on access and more integrated into life. You stop waiting for the ideal apparatus. You begin to notice the ritual already available.
Flexibility Is the Real Outcome
Flexibility is the true measure of contrast work. A resilient protocol makes life feel less fragile, not more dependent on exact temperatures, timing, or equipment. When the sauna is closed or the plunge is unavailable, the practice continues.
This freedom matters. Paid facilities, home equipment, and ideal conditions are useful, but they are not the foundation. The foundation is your ability to meet the environment with attention. You carry that capacity everywhere.
Start by questioning the automatic controls. Does the heat need to rise that high, or can a sweater and a cooler room serve you better. Does the air conditioning need to start immediately, or can you stay with warmth for a few deliberate minutes. Precision begins with awareness.
Heavy bundling deserves the same inquiry. Warmth protects, and protection is essential in real winter conditions. But there is a difference between dressing wisely and removing every trace of the season. Let the body receive enough information to remain adaptive.
Sleep temperature brings a useful nuance. Research and practice often point toward cooler rooms for better sleep, and many people rest well in that range. But the body also learns from seasonal variation. The aim is not delicacy. The aim is recovery that remains steady when conditions shift.
An air conditioning outage reveals the depth of the practice. Without adaptation, a warm night can feel like a crisis. With training, it becomes uncomfortable but workable. You may sweat, adjust, and sleep less perfectly, yet you do not lose your equilibrium.
That is the quiet promise of the big picture. Contrast work does not end when the timer stops or the tub drains. It changes your relationship with the day. Heat and cold become less personal, less disruptive, more navigable.
We return to balance as the standard. Not maximal exposure. Not rigid optimization. Balance. You build the capacity to be outside longer, move with more ease, and stay present when comfort is not immediate.
The practice is deliberate, but it is not precious. It belongs in the shower, the car, the trail, the winter errand, the summer evening, and the imperfect room. Recovery becomes a way of living with the world as it is.
