So, we'll see you guys there. You're listening to Random Fit with hosts Wendy Bats and Ken Miller, winner of a Gold Mark Award for digital media. [music] Hi everyone, welcome to Random Fit. I am Wendy Bats here with my friend and co-host Ken Miller. Ken, how's it going? Everything is great, Wendy. How you doing? I am doing fantastic and super excited. As I say almost, it seems like every time we have a special guest. But today, we're diving into one of the most important yet often overlooked areas of fitness, which is recovery. And we are super thrilled to have um our account specialist and dear friend Tanner Kaplan joining us from Hyper Ice and we're going to ask him some questions especially around the topic of recovery

1:32

seeing how he is definitely more of an expert than I am. [laughter] Who is it? Right. Hi Tanner. Hey guys. Uh thanks thanks for having me. It's uh it's a pleasure to be here. excited to uh chat a little bit about Hyper Ice and and some recovery. All right, Ken, you want to dive in first? Yeah. Um, you know, Tanner, um, you know, I I've been involved with Hyprise from the first time and just a little background information with my experience with Hyper started off at the uh at a golf fitness expo in uh, Louisiana in New Orleans. And that's when I met our friend Joe and Star. And one of the first things that they, you know, walking by the booth, you know, you're walking by all these vendors and they just stopped me and they just, you know, gave me the spiel. And at that point in time, I got on the the Viper, which is their vibrating roller, right? And basically all you had to do was get on it and feel it and then walk around and you say to yourself, "Man, this can make a difference, right?" And so that's when I started my relationship with your company, Hyper Ice, as far as using the products. Now Tanner, [snorts] that was gosh almost 10 years ago, maybe 10ish years ago now, but I caught it at a certain point when you came out with the vibration through the the Viper. But

3:04

give us a little bit of backstory on Hyper Ice from the beginning because you know Anthony and I caught it at a certain point, but give us give the listeners a little background on actually where Hyper Ice began. Yeah, absolutely. You know, it's it's a really cool story. Um, our founder, Anthony Catz, um, he was a, you know, a teacher down in Southern California, loved surfing, but also loved playing pickup basketball, um, down in Orange County. And somehow he, you know, made his way into the circle of some professional athletes like, um, you know, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, um, and, uh, you know, watching professional sports, you see all these guys with um ice packs and ace bandages wrapping it around their shoulders and different different parts of their body. And Anthony goes, you know, there's got to be a better way than this. So, being a surfer from Southern California, he went back to the drawing board, cut up his wet suit, um and created the first ever ice compression sleeve. So, that's kind of the start of Hyper Ice. Obviously we have done a lot of innovation since then. I think um you know you mentioned the Viper um that was one of the original products that that we made and a cool story about that is you know he saw Gary Ve um working on Kobe and saw

4:35

that Kobe was rolling out on a power plate and he's like oh there's something here. I I can do something with this. And um that's kind of how the Viper came to be. But you know, we've innovated since then to percussion. We've innovated to heat and vibration. Um contrast therapy. And you know, uh with the Normatech compression has been such a game changer in my life. So um anyways, yeah, that's just a little bit of background about Hype Rice and how we came to be and where we're at right now. So, well, I'm going to piggyback off of that. So, I am gonna, you know, kind of go out of order, which is what I normally do. But with many of the products that you just listed, of course, you talked a little bit about vibration, percussion, thermal technology. So, can you explain now again in simple terms, so don't make it complicated, but what's the science behind these methods and how do they truly help your body recover? Yeah, sure. So, starting with vibration, I would say, you know, a lot of our products are with myofascial release tools. So, when it comes to rolling out, no one likes to roll out. I don't really If you like rolling out, I think you might be a little bit crazy because it's painful. It's it's uncomfortable. And um what the vibration does, it actually triggers the muscle a little bit better. Um you know, cuts on time needed to roll out um and makes it a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. Um so, yeah, that's

6:06

vibration. When it comes to percussion, what what you're doing with the Hypervolt is you're dispersing blood flow and also giving that muscle tissue a deep massage. Um, really great for warming up. Um, and it's it's really good for, you know, focused recovery in targeted areas. Um, I guess when we're talking about thermal technology, um, you know, or contrast that technology with heat as well as cold, um, therapy. So the heat what it's doing is it's it's relax it's really relaxing those tight muscles um making it optimal for you know um preworkout activities. Um with the cold uh it's kind of the opposite. It's used obviously post-workout um you know to kind of you know give your body a little bit more of a cool down um after after a really really tough workout. Thanks for uh thanks for explaining the differences and all that because you know in my facility I've got the charging station and I've got the Viper, I've got the sphere and I've got the the volts hanging out just right there. And like you said, T I and I'll actually back you up in saying that nobody likes to roll, right? you know, just for the amount of tension and and who likes to do their outer thigh or their quad, right, when they've never done that before? But I've I've

7:36

realized that the u the Viper is one great way to kind of initiate somebody into the uh into the realm of of selfmyofascial technique because like what you you were talking about with with the vibration, it actually offsets some of the the pain receptors that tell you, okay, this is painful. This is not good. But if you can override that with that vibration from the Viper, just like my very very first experience um using that at the golf uh golf trade show, um I find that my clients and the members of the the clients of the trainers that work out my facility, they'll they'll actually voluntarily now get on the roller, right? Because it is right. it's not as painful as if somebody just got on there um right off the bat without the vibration. So um I and I actually attribute the compliance that a lot of the um personal training clients that come through my doors, you know, their compliance with implementing selfmofascial technique to vibration technology. So, you know, now they're coming in before their training sessions and they're staying a little bit after their training sessions just for the sake of getting that tension relief. Um, and it's all for the purpose of recovery. So, when we talk

9:06

about recovery, just to kind of give us a little bit of of scope here when it comes to how vibration, percussion, um, heat helps somebody, you know, move better and feel better. How does Hyperice define recovery and and how is it that these days it's just as important as the training itself? Yeah, that's a great question. Um and you know, our mission statement um is, you know, move better, live better, be better, and that goes for whether you're a professional athlete, you know, you're you're injured or um an elderly person, like literally any walk of life. Um, it's it's really about how you prepare your body to move and perform its best every day. Um, and personally as an athlete, being able to perform at your best means recovering at your best and you're going to see results um, when you're in that 100% capacity of what you're able to do in my opinion. So hopefully that answered your question. I think that's a definitely a great segue into and thinking about just recovery as a whole. Now, one thing that Hyper Ice did was it wasn't that long ago that they acquired a company called Normatch and I'm a huge advocate for Normatch as well, like the boots. So, you guys have seen probably people in

10:37

these long uh boots that you put up. I I always say that it looks kind of like you're a hockey goalie but not quite so big and you're laidback and then all of a sudden these things compress and relax. And I know with a lot of my professional athletes, especially if they play golf or they have a lot of walking to do or they are a runner and they need to do recovery for their legs, we put them in the boots. And so I thought it was genius that Hyper decided to acquire Normatch because it really kind of seems like it it made it come full circle. But can you talk a little bit about Normatch and what the difference is because I mean we talk about these devices and what the vibration does. This is something that's another one of y'all' s amazing products um that you have but just kind of talk about the differences of those. Sure. Yeah. And I'll give a little bit of background about the uh the Normatech in general. So this was the original lymphatic drainage system um medical device for lympadema patients um who are not able to filter their blood flow the way that you and I can. Um basically their lymph nodes don't work the way ours do. And the only really foolproof way to filter out that blood is to move that blood flow up to your core where your heart can clean it and then pump fresh blood back down. So that gets rid of the bad blood flow. the lactic acid that's trapped inside um of of your bloodstream kind of creating um you know inflammation and swelling in certain limbs. So um originally um a you know

12:11

lympadeema device um but we saw how it can kind of um positively affect athletes and people who um need that quick recovery uh to perform at their best. And um yeah, it's it's a really really great recovery tool. But, uh, honestly, I I hop in them every single night because I just love the way it feels and it's a way for me to kind of like mentally unwind as well. yeah. And I'll say because um I know that you're a former water polo player. Do you still play water polo at any level? You know, I play masters here and there. Um, I'm definitely not as fast or strong as I used to be. I think I'm more of a golfer now, to be honest. Oh, okay. Well, I was going to say my my daughter um she's a freshman and she's on her water polo team for school. Love it. And now at night, like she didn't used to do this before, but you have five days a week, two hours of practice. Um she gets in the normch. I So I had to get the the short legs for her because she's five something. Um, but I put her in those boots and now I mean she puts herself in the boots now, but the feeling of relief that she gets cuz I'll check in with her 20 30 minutes after she's been in there and she's her legs she never fails. Her legs always feel fresh afterwards like the the effects of

13:44

practice and and uh playing definitely gets alleviated after being in the norm. So that's that's one of those things I was just wondering like if you were to go back in time when you were actually at the competitive level. How do you think you'd feel like if you had the normate available to you back then? No, that's that's a great question because I've had three knee surgeries in my right knee um growing up just being super active and um you know my my knee swells up all the time and using the normitech now is incredible. Um it is in my opinion the fastest recovery you can get. Um and you know you see a difference after 15 minutes. And what I always tell people is when they get in there, after they get out, they're going to feel light, they're going to feel airy, they're going to feel ready to go. Um, and people are actually astonished when they hop out of the normex on how well it works and how fast it actually works. But to answer your question, gosh, this would have been a gamecher. You know, in in the training room, I was really only using um, you know, myofascial release tools and the Hypervolt. So, I did get a little introduction into Hyper Ice in college, but man, if [clears throat] we had if we had the Normax, I would have uh really benefited. So, yeah, [laughter] we all agree. I can say yes.

15:19

So let me ask you the next one then because you you're talking about when you were in college and we talked about Normatech and you had your early introduction into Hyper Bryce product line with the Hypervault. Um when you're talking about athletes incorporating the suite of H of Hyper products um how generally how are people using it these days? cuz I know you travel all over the country and so you have a different experience than a lot of practitioners as far as how people are using it u before, during and after training. So as a exercise enthusiast, how how are you recommending some of the products being used? Sure. Yeah. I mean, we've got and to be honest, all of our products, there's not really a prescription on on what you should use this for. And recovery is very personal personable in my opinion. So, um you know, whether you like cryotherapy, whether you like uh compression or anything like it's very up to you and how you want to get your recovery done. But how I'm recommending it is, you know, we've got certain products that are really good for um preworkout, like I mentioned, the Hypervolt percussion, dispersing that blood [clears throat] flow is a really really good way to kickstart those muscles um as well as using heat before. So any of our um thermal technology products or contrast

16:49

therapy like the Hyper Ice X or our heat and vibration that's going to be really really useful for for warm-ups. Um and just a personal anecdote like I I have two bulging discs. I know my body is just breaking down at this point, but I use the Venom two back um every time I go golfing and I wear it at the range while I'm warming up hitting balls. Um it's been a really big game changer for me cuz my back gets very stiff. Um now I think when we're talking about during a workout or during a athletic uh event um you know cramps happen you know muscles tighten up and so what's the best way to kind of um you know target those muscles is probably the hypervolt. So, um I would say during a workout having a hyperbolt just there in case or you know if you just kind of want to loosen up um in the middle of a workout. It's a great tool. Um and then I love the Normatech compression is like I said my my favorite product. It's u it's really cool what you're able to do in that time frame and takes 15 minutes. So I think that the norm attack's great. Not to mention we have different attachments for different body parts. The leg, the hip attachment, the arm attachment. And [clears throat] uh we actually, you know, recently just came out with the product Hyperase X2, the second generation of our contrast therapy

18:20

devices. And uh we've kind of merged temperature with compression, which is really exciting. So um just some some cool stuff there. But that's how I would recommend using our products. I love it. Well, first of all, got to check out this new product because yes, I don't have it yet. But I will say one of the things that I love, you talk about the um the Volt. And for those of you guys that don't know what the Volt is, it's basically the percussion gun that you would see that you see all the time advertised. And one of the I think most genius thing is they have this attachment that's called the heated head. and you put the heated head on this this um percussion device and so when you are cramping t when you said that I use it all the time with all of my clients even before we start and they just are loving every minute of it so it's before the torture after the torture whichever way you want to look at it I think that was a fantastic thing I got it as a Christmas gift from my dear friend Ken Miller by the way and I was like this thing is like one of my favorite things ever. But before I get into my next question to you, I want to say that this episode of Random Fit is brought to you by NASM1, the membership for trainers and coaches. Again, I know that there is you guys have quite the product line and I can't really say that that I don't use all of them other than the new one you just spoke about because didn't know that one was out yet. Um, but with that being said, do they vary with different populations? meaning. Is there one that you would suggest more for youth athletes in comparison to maybe some of our seniors? That's a good question. Um, and like I said before, recovery is very personable. So, we've done our best with pretty much all of our products to design it to be comfortable for any walk of life. Um, with different power settings, pressure levels, speeds, different temperatures. So I would say no in a sense that our products work for everybody. Um the only thing I can think of is with the normate maybe sizing. Um so you know we've got our short sizes that go up to around if you're 5 foot three um and below. That's probably around the best size range and then we've got a standard version that goes up to about 63. So, um, but I think that all of our products can kind of help out with any any walk of life.

21:22

So, with with that being said, I know that I know this is starting to sound like a big um infomercial for Normatch, but [laughter] but it's you know what's funny is because um I'm giggling at that is because when when somebody incorporates invests in an aritect, let's say I have a baseball player, they they get the arms, right? [clears throat] So, if it's a baseball pitcher, and I know Wendy's got experience, strong experience with with baseball players as well, but you know, you're going to have the legs, you're going to have the arm compression, but what's always funny to me is when I I ask for feedback from my clients, you know, how's it going? It's like, well, if I can get 10 minutes in it or 15 minutes like you tell me, but my son is in it, my wife is in it, my dad is using, so everybody else in that household is is using the normch, for example. Same thing goes with the vault. I'm sure you always, you know, you you yourself, Wendy, hear that, you know, you have your client invest in the vault, the Hypervolt, but it's always the client plus plus whoever else is in their household. So, when we talk about our initial recommendations as practitioners, as personal trainers and strength coaches is usually for our clients, what other aspects have you heard? Again, you're all over the place. you you've seen people use this, but what other conditions or age groups I know we kind of already talked

22:52

about this, but how else what other let's say who else is is finding big benefits when it comes to the idea of recovery overall? Um when I I think obviously when we think of recovery, we think about athletes. Um and you know, injury prevention. Um people have recovery routines and warm-up routines that really save them from getting injured down the long road. Uh and I can relate to this because I've been an athlete my whole life um through college and uh recovery has been a big part of my story. Uh granted, I don't know if I did the best job considering I've got tons of ailments in my shoulders, my back, um my knees, and um you know, I have I've heard so many personal anecdotes about um you know, getting rid of inflammation before before a big game and how how beneficial that is to perform at your best. And I've said this a couple times, but it really, really makes a difference when you feel your best. Gosh, there the sky, it feels like the sky's is the limit, you know? Feels like you're flying, whatever you're doing, whether that's swimming, running, lifting. Um, there's nothing better than just, you know, being able to dominate a workout or dominate someone in the pool or, you know, it's it's just I don't know,

24:24

something you can do with recovery that um really makes a difference. Well, I've noticed that if I do the boots before I go to bed, like if I and I'm usually working, checking emails or or working online with students, I have the boots on and it's actually pretty funny. So, when we talk about these boots, again, I I kind of told you what they would look like if you haven't seen them, but they go like cell to cell. So, from basically the top of your foot and it compresses all the way up as high as the boots will go and then it slowly releases and then it fills back up and slowly releases. So you just see my computer moving up and down the whole time. So it's actually pretty funny, especially if you're on a Zoom call [laughter] and you have the computer sitting in your lap. However, I've noticed personally, and you guys have heard me do multiple podcasts. Like I don't sleep that often or that well, and I noticed that I get so I get just better. I I sleep better once I do something like that. Whether I'm using the roller, something with the vibration or compression just lets my body relax. And if you haven't experienced any of the products, I strongly guarantee it. Actually, when I was telling you that I don't leave I don't go far without it. This is this hidden heat. If you guys are seeing it, it's this little flat thing and you just literally put it in your device and then you go crazy. Um it's always closed, by the way. Um but uh I guess my question, we talk about how great it is. My clients love it. I order so many different products from Hyperise for my clients as gifts and or

25:54

they want me to just purchase whatever I think is best for them. So Tanner, you've been huge help with all of that. Um but what kind of feedback are you getting from you the coaches or you know your trainers or people they they have to write into you all the time and say these are amazing. But what is the typical feedback and is there one product that I know you said that the normch but is there one product that the coaches are just like it's a must have in the training room? Yeah. No, that's that's a good question. Um I think that the feedback we've gotten from coaches, trainers, gym owners, managers um is is amazing. Um fit or recovery is the next big step in the fitness industry. And I think that if people don't start adapting, they're going to start seeing or can expect to see retention with their members or clients drop. Um, you know, where they can go and get the recovery elsewhere. Um, but being that resource is super beneficial because recovery makes you feel better. And when you're in a better mood, I'm sure that you're going to be doing um a lot better business with people who are just super happy on on the results. Um, like I said, being able to perform at your best is is the biggest factor and recovery is going to get you there. Um, from a business standpoint, I think that, um, whether

27:25

you're monetizing our products or not, being able to offer this, um, to your members is is a huge advantage. well, to follow up on that, I I want to ask too, because again, we're throwing out these names. We've got the Bold, we've got the X, we've got the Venom Back, which is fantastic because it's like a back brace that that shoots heat and vibrates. Especially when you said you wear wear it to warm up with with uh when you're on the range and you're going to play golf. I have all my golfers wear those. Fantastic. By the way, but if somebody has because this is a common issue that we're seeing more and more of. Obviously, we've seen things happen with the Achilles, unfortunately, especially with some of our professional athletes, but I know with a lot of my day-to - day clients, they're experiencing a lot of knee issues. So, in your recommendation based on different products, what are some of the things that if somebody's having some ailments with knees specifically um besides the Normatech boots, what would you suggest or what what is available to them and maybe they should look into? Yeah, that's a good question. So, we've got a couple of different really cool products. Obviously, I hit the Normatch a couple times um during this podcast, but um we've also got our Hyper Ice X line. um first generation came out a couple of years ago and you know about last month we came out with the Hyper Ice X2. Now it's for your shoulder and your knee. Um I think that the Hyper X knee is the coolest product

28:56

that we make at this point. Like I mentioned it does contrast therapy, but this is the first time we've introduced um contrast therapy with compression. Um, I haven't seen anything out there like it. Um, and the release that you're getting around around the knee area, being able to heat and ice while compressing at the same time is pretty pretty cool. Um, now we also have the Hyper Ice or sorry, the Venom 2 leg that wraps around your knee. Um, which is great warm-up tool. It's heat and vibration like you were mentioning with the back. It's the same product but uh applicable for your knee. Um and uh you know a lot of inflammation can come from um you know your your uh quads and whatnot. So using using the Hypervolt around that area and in a certain way so you're not hurting yourself or damaging any part of your leg um is can be pretty beneficial as well. But yeah, for the knee especially, I think the Hyper Ice X2 is is the coolest product. So, I'll I'll at least attest to the Hyper Ice X because I have that. And there's Wendy and Eric, I know that uh you guys can't see me from the armpits on down, but there's been many a time I've had the uh X on my knee, you know, because

30:27

it's I can sit here for however, you know, 15 20 minutes and that the contrast between the hot and the cold, Um, you know, when we're done recording, I get up and it's like I did, you know, a whole mobility routine for my knee. So, not only is the tension down, but my my knee is just like it was before I had gone on that run. So, I like Wendy says, I I can't wait to to get a hold of that uh X2 just because the compression, I can't imagine putting all of those components, heat, cold, and compression. Now, um, now one one more question because you you've uh answered some questions for us already, but without giving out any trade secrets. Um, what what's next for Hyprise? Because it seems like I can't log on to my social without something coming on. It's like, where did they come up with that idea? But I'm sure you guys have things already on the runway, but is there anything you can tell us about what's what's coming up next or or certain aspects of how you guys come up with that innovation to to be the next recovery tool out there? Yeah, good question. I'm not sure how much I can say. [laughter] Um, but we're, like I mentioned, we're

31:57

doing some really cool stuff with contrast therapy and compression. Um, and I can't wait to see um what our engineers have in store in the next couple of years because um like I said that that knee device has been a game changer for me. Um so really excited about how our engineers are bringing those two technologies together. Um and one thing I I can definitely touch on is the elites for the normate. So it's a more travel friendly. It's a lighter um device. uh doesn't have a control unit or a hose to use, so less pieces to handle, holds a longer charge. Um there might be some more attachments coming out. Um we came out with the Normatch Elite Leg package uh last year and uh we're moving on to different different attachments. Um there's some other stuff in the works. I'm not sure if I can tell you, but stay close around Q1 and next year and uh we'll see what happens. All right. Yeah, thanks for the insider information. So, other attachments for the elite. Okay. All right. So, I'll keep my eyes out for that. Uh well, Tanner, hey, it's always good seeing you, brother. Um, you know, I always get some great information out of you whenever we have a chance to interact, but to have you on this episode of Random Fit. Um, you know, you've you've really shed some light on on

33:28

application, the history, as well as giving us a little teaser on what's to happen. So, thanks Tanner for being with us on this episode of of Random Fit. No, thank you. Thank Thank you guys for having me. I'm I'm excited to do it and I always love talking to you guys. So, um, anytime you need me back, let me know. All right. Maybe after that next update. So, we we'll have I know, right? [laughter] All right. So, for those of you listening to uh our special guest, Mr. Tanner Kaplan, along with Wendy Bats and myself, Ken Miller, [snorts] thank you for listening to this episode of Random Fit. Uh like, follow, subscribe, download. Uh let us know what you want us to talk about on a future episode. Give us a five out of five rating if and when you can. Recovery Is a Signal, Not a Luxury

The body adapts to the signals it receives. Heat, cold, compression, strength work, breath, and nutrition all ask a slightly different question of the nervous system. Used well, they create a rhythm: brief stress, clear recovery, better readiness.

The Protocol Matters

The strongest message is restraint. More heat is not automatically better. Colder water is not automatically wiser. A useful protocol has a purpose, a dose, and a recovery window. It should leave you more capable, not depleted.

Recovery works best when the signal is clear, the dose is honest, and the body has room to adapt.

Practical Takeaways

  1. Choose one recovery input at a time, then notice how sleep, mood, soreness, and focus respond.

  2. Keep the dose precise. End sessions while you still feel composed and able to recover.

  3. Pair stress with support: hydration, protein, minerals, breath, and unhurried rest.

Words Worth Hearing

The deeper lesson is simple: recovery is not passive. It is a practice of creating the conditions where the body can do its best work.
