I immediately had EKG changes and crushing chest pain and I was like hey man I'm really really uncomfortable and he pulls the drapes back and he goes I need you to shut the up so I can get this and he immediately sedates me yeah this week we have Dr Jeremy London who is a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon fun fact the first person I've ever done beat the heat with or Saed with that actually had a heart attack in the past so heart surgeon has had a heart attack made me a little nervous but super healthy guy another cool thing is he's one of the first cardiothoracic surgeons to go through functional medicine training which means he's looking at the body holistically trying to find root causes and I really think that's the direction medicine is going to go in future so very Innovative very forward thinking and his goal is to help as many people as possible so awesome guy let's see if he has what it takes to beat the heat all right this is how it works the SAA starts at 160 ° every 5 minutes it goes up 10 ° till we max out at 230 ° as soon as that door closes a 30 minute timer starts and that's the length of the podcast if you beat the heat but throughout the conversation there's five trivia questions that pertain to the guest if they get the question wrong water goes on the Rocks which makes it way hotter in the SAA if they make it the full 30 minutes they win the coved golden Ladle award which is the most sought after trophy in all sports and competition so let's see if they have what it takes to beat the Heat [Music]
all right Dr JY London welcome to beat the heat thanks man been super super excited really have how you feeling um you know we'll see what happens a little nervous absolutely I feel like you're like the most prepared of all of our guests that yeah thanks for that yeah you had the water yeah the element yet it all speaking of we'll crack open an element for our sponsor you pop open awesome we'll do it cheers you work with them absolutely I love their stuff there's not a better uh tasting the electrolyte out there totally agree all right so just to be clear so cardiac surgeon this would not be the recommended protocol for optimal heart health this is pushing the um the limits for sure but uh you know I think that if it's an acclimated process then I think it's not unreasonable and you got listen to your body for sure you know if it takes me to the edge and I'm not happy I'll see you during lunch see so we were a little nervous because three years ago you had a cardiac incident yourself I did yeah that was um that was an eye opener for sure were there any like indications or do you have any warning or anything like that none at all I mean you know I don't have any risk factors really I don't smoke I don't have a family history try to eat reasonably well blood biomarkers
to eat reasonably well blood biomarkers or yeah I mean my cholesterol was maybe a little high but certainly not in a Range where there was any huge concern um and it was weird I got really bad Co early on really bad Co cuz I was kind of front lines with yeah these really sick people you know we would put people on the eemo machine you know and they couldn't get enough oxygen in their body so we were like all over these folks and I got really sick and I never really recovered after that um and there's some thought process you know because you do create clot more easily after having Co and I don't have any calcium in my arteries so I was struggling for maybe I don't know 8 10 months where just exhausted so I guess in retrospect yeah there were kind of soft signs but yeah that was um that was not my proudest moment as far as how I handled all of that and what exactly happened like so you so we were out in in the country my wife's family has some property and we built a cabin up there and we were I get up really early in the morning and I kind of got up I'm walking around and my wife looked me she goes do you feel okay I was like you know I just got this really wicked harburn I was like just reflex and I've had reflex you know
reflex and I've had reflex you know whenever yeah and she's like are you sure I was like seriously like you're going to question me yeah I know right I was like come on she's like okay she goes you just don't look right right so usually I'll go and I'll sit down and I'll read or whatever and took some an AES or whatever I sat down and I felt fine I was like cool so then we we've got four dogs and we love to get out in the country and walk our dogs so we head out it was cold we get about4 mile maybe a half mile from the house and my reflex comes back I'm like H it's kind of weird yeah get a little bit further and I'm like peeling my clothes off and you know Tracy's like dude come on what's wrong I was like I don't know I said I think I need to use the bathroom she's like okay so we turn around and we we Huff it back back and not to get overly graphic but like as soon as I sat down on the toilet the symptoms went away immediately which is a sign of cardiac because you know as you stress your heart and you have a blockage the area underneath that blockage gets blood starved you have pain so when you sit down and you rest that all goes away and literally as soon as I sat down I was like no way like I you knew it dude I you're in the middle of nowhere at this point well I mean it's not really the middle of nowhere but I mean we were an
middle of nowhere but I mean we were an hour away but I didn't really make much of an issue at that point I decided that I'd just kind of roll with it during the day kind of just went against everything you probably recommend why don't you just worry about yourself for minute I say do got story okay yeah drink your element y got it so kind of went through the day and I kind of go upstairs and it would come back and I'd sit down like God you've got to be kidding me so still thinking like you thought that's what was happening okay got it so you're just ignoring it yeah the heat is like truth serum yeah for sure that's how this all started it's all rolling out today and so my wife and my other kids actually went back into town and my youngest wanted to stay to do an evening hunt which you know love to do that with him so we get out in the stand and and late in you know late afternoon hunt it's winter time so it gets dark early and he actually harvests a couple of deer and I walk out of the stand it's pitch black and I have crushing chest pane right there in the middle of the field and my son is 15 at the time we have no cell service we're a quar mile from theck Self Service nothing and I'm thinking he's looking for those he's going to find me right out there for sure dead and I just at that moment was
sure dead and I just at that moment was like okay bro you got to pull yourself together slow deep breaths so I go over been first of all he's a smart kid he's like Dad what are you doing over there yeah he's I was like well sometimes they run over here he goes you're a 100 yards off I was like yeah you never know they could be over here so I get up and I walk to them and I had to stop like three times and he's like what's going on I said well I've got I got some reflux and I just got to slow down he goes stopping helps reflux but you but but when you said that you knew like you were oh dude I knew what's that you knew it wasn't that 100% so you're saying the trying to get out of the field right so story continues so we you know find one don't find the other I'm like yeah sometimes you just this is the way it is and we load up and we drop home and I settle down cuz I'm sitting down now whatever it's an hour drive back home I get home I don't say a word to my wife I took an aspirin and a beta blocker and I went to bed next morning I get up and I go up the stairs in our house and I immediately have crushing chest pain and I looked at Tracy I was like something's really wrong and she looked at me and she said this is the most selfish thing you have ever done to me and the boys not to
have ever done to me and the boys not to mention the fact that you drove our child back yeah an hour and she was just like you know why didn't you tell me I said well you would have made me go to the emergency room she goes right yeah dumb that's what you do that's where you should be yeah she like she's like exactly I said you're right and I I mean I I had no recourse at all you know but I was very fortunate I called one of my buddies you know first of all I call him I'm like hey this is what's going on he's like no a funny reaction anyone else would be freaking out he's like no way man like really you take great care of yourself because it's going to be negative I was like no it's not going to be negative so he puts me in the hospital and takes me to the Cal lab and I wouldn't let him sedate me cuz you know might be a little bit of a control issues potentially sense yeah so I wanted to watch and I wanted to see what was going on and so he squirts it and I've got this like 99% lesion to my right coronary and I can hear him talking about it plus I can hear the meds they're giving so I know what's coming you know and to put a stint in there they have to put a wire across it so that they can then put the stin well when he did that I immediately had EKG changes and crushing chest pain and I was like hey man I'm really really uncomfortable and he pulls the drapes back and he goes
and he pulls the drapes back and he goes I need you to shut the up so I can get this done and he immediately sedates me yeah and look I was very fortunate he put you know a stint in and I felt like a new person and it's really you know it's amazing because when you have these kind of touch points he's really dramatic touch points in your life like things that were important to me MH on Monday morning weren't even on the list yeah on Tuesday morning you know like my entire world got reprioritized like my friends and the people that I love that was it like everything else matter just didn't even matter it was really you know it I guess we all kind of need that it's kind of gift yeah it really I mean that's how I look at it not to mention I feel great and you know really have had no additional problems I'm definitely more careful now with you know we can for the song the podcast more careful as far as like my dietary choices because we can all do better when it comes to that kind of stuff and you know trying to you know just trying to dial in you know following my biomarkers more closely and what have you you know um it was interesting my oldest son Max about four or five months ago was like Dad you you should put on a CGM yeah and I was like max if you want me to put it on so I can show
you want me to put it on so I can show you what a great job uhoh I do with my blood sugars my diet my exercise like I mean for it sure he's like Dad I don't he's like I just think it would be good yeah for you to check it out I've wor them quite a bit just to see right right and I mean I I agreed with because like you know you don't know till you know and that which is not track cannot be improved upon or managed whatever so I put it on and literally within 4 days I realized that like things that I was eating that I thought were really dialed Not only was I getting kind of the normal physiologic spikes that we all get I that's but it was staying up and so I called my interns I was like hey man what do you think these blood sugars he's like you need an A1C and it was 5. 8 oh wow so you know like again me being the whatever that I tend to be yeah I mean you know it opened my eyes and my blood sugars have been dramatically better you know it's really what did you change so I just cut out those things that were really spiking me and most most of them were like like meal replacement kind of stuff bars rice was a big one with me me too rice cakes was crazy I was like I thought I was doing so good yeah like I don't even like
so good yeah like I don't even like eating it I thought I was doing something good right because it's so bad had to be good right yeah but um yeah I mean it was really more just kind of dialing those edges and then it was simple things like just the power of a 152 minute walk after a meal you know to watch what my blood sugars would do even more so than like really pushing myself in a hard workout or or whatever what what did you find that made the biggest difference uh with a blood sugar yeah I mean uh any like long like you said walking or even like zone two stuff just flatten I could eat almost anything that would flatten it out yeah and then uh yeah like like blueberries were weird like and then um rice um and it it was amazing just a couple tweaks uh made such a big difference but like a CGM people would never recommend it but I was like I feel like it's one of those things where like wear it for a month and just see and then it's like it's net positive you know my prediction is it's going to be the next wearable right I mean it should really be a part of your Internal Medicine Family Practice workup because even if at the end you go oh well it's nothing okay but now you know yeah you know check the box move on but if you're in the 80% of folks that are pre-diabetic and have no idea then you have an opportunity right yeah and it's like even like you know my dad for example he didn't check his blood sugar for a long time and it was super high where you could have had an intervention way earlier so it's like one of those things you might as well just do it if you have access to it right and I think
you have access to it right and I think as the cost now is slowly starting to come down a little bit you know I think that that's going to help make it accessible to for other people and what have you all right so we're at the first trivia question beat the heat is brought to you by element element is my favorite electrolyte South M on the market I drink one pretty much every single morning their new cans are awesome easy and taste great use our link drink element. com bethe so drink element. com beattheheat to support us by getting your own element and using our link it really helps the podcast out and you will not be disappointed electrolytes are crucial for health function longevity uh cognitive function so check it out you'll be feeling better and more hydrated every single day we're about 8 minutes in I think so if you get these wrong you don't water goes on the Rocks all right so your favorite band is the Rolling Stones correct big fan we'll see all right the cover to their 1971 Sticky Fingers album was designed by what artist it's on the tip of my very warm Tong I can't I hint tough because it would probably give it away it'll give it away yeah oh my God all right just dump it you got to take a guess um blond the guy who had the bleach
um blond the guy who had the bleach blonde um gray hair and warh come with it all right it's going to suck for a second all right it'll be okay I'm down here okay so for now now we're going to go never done this before but we're going to do a rapid fire Dr jimy London this or that Health Trend Edition so what you're going to do is pick you have to pick between the two right so I'm going to give you two things let's say so the first one is uh omegas or creatine for a supplement if you had to pick only one oh you have choose going to go rip it off okay all right so this or that Dr Jeremy London so omegas Omega-3s or creatine creatine plant-based diet or corn or carnivore diet full carnivore yeah all in plant-based okay intermittent fasting or calorie counting calary County cardio or hit training like like long cardio or hit cardio cardio strength training or endurance training training strength running or cycling uh cold therapy or sauna sauna massage or foam rolling massage active recovery or complete rest active recovery mouth tape or sleep mask don't have an opinion on them because I've never done it your wife though take the tape um nicotine or
caffeine um don't those go together dou up stacked um caffeine uh alcohol or THC use not like you personally but what would you recommend if you had a pck TC quality sleep or optimized nutrition sleep uh screens off at night or blue like blocking glasses screens off vitamin D or magnesium I'd give vitamin D on that one low sugar or low sodium as far as the lab abnormal it uh diet diet low sugar uh probiotics or fiber supplements fiber dental health or skin Health dental Abbot or medronic putting on the spot with that one um you can say both o that's tough um I'd have to go metronic on that metronic stattin or natural cholesterol management um tough yeah I mean I would go natural you know as first line yes you pick one uh artificial sweetener so like sugar-free or real sugar I would take
sugar I would take artificial Vape or chewing tobacco [Laughter] wow um I'm going to have to take Vape on it it which is really contrary right but I mean Cancer the cancer side of things right well the proof is with one we're not sure about the other so um cardiac CT or stress test for a diagnostic if you only can pick one stress test uh surgical robotics or traditional techniques um I'd go traditional uh only a couple more IV hydration therapy or oral rehydration um I do oral anti-aging peptides or natural aging nice you frust that that's good that's hard yeah I want to qualify like half those answers yeah yeah we can go if you want to go back and touch no it's cool man like you got to make a decision sometimes you know it's hard when it's the either or situation cuz you're like could be the better of the evils right or situ everything's situational I feel like did you write multiple guest tests for my parents are both teachers so maybe yeah here it is all right so we're going to go question number two because we're we're running through the time here I can't
running through the time here I can't wait all right so you were stung by a stingray right your hand yes pretty bad I heard you almost uh lost some some fluids because of it yeah where were you I was on my brother-in - law's Dock and great fishing hole and it's interesting the stingray and fish had had too much to drink that day so they couldn't delineate the water from my hand for the amount that they had you know two carbon fragments that they had consumed yeah it's crazy isn't it when I pulled that Stingray up which I've done a thousand times it just hammered me right in the hand and I've got I think a reasonable pain tolerance I wouldn't say it's like excessive but reasonable without a doubt the most intense pain I have ever felt yes I don't want to experience that you do not okay so um the question what what's the voltage that a stingray can can kick out and it's similar to some appliances and maybe what household appliance would it be similar to I have to be honest with you I thought I was unaware that there was a voltage associated with a standard Stingray all together cuz my understanding is it's all now I could be wrong but no yeah no there are stingrays that I think have a voltage associated with them but the ones that we have
with them but the ones that we have locally it's all Venom related got it and it's crazy if you look at their tails the barbs go backwards so when they fishing hook they go in easily but when you pull it out the barbs break off see quench stay in there and leave that toxin in there and it's it's unreal like I could feel it ascending my arm so I had never treated a stingray injury it wasn't something I was familiar with so I jumped down on the boat and of course I put my hand in the cooler wrong heat denatures like ites in that Venom so we ran into the house once one of the ER dos straightened me out and my brother-in - law has that like point of service hot water and literally within minutes of putting my my hand and arm under there the pain was yeah now if I took it out for too long it took about 45 minutes but it ended up that ended up having retained barbs got operated on about four or five times thought they were going to have to fuse the rest oh that's a lingering yeah because the they' it's that that micob bacterium from the ocean that's so dangerous like if you look at shrimper hands from getting hand they've got all these nodules all over their hands and it's almost like tuberculosis modules and that's what they thought was in my wrist thank goodness it wasn't yeah yeah but
thank goodness it wasn't yeah yeah but they had to open it fully and everything it was yeah it was not so you got to pick a voltage yeah I I'm going to go um I'm going to go 100 volts 220 is about we'll do half of a half a lat no lay it on me come on let's play the game all right so I want to talk to you what's so cool I love all your social media content but it's been explosive like you you know it seems like you've exploded I think but I don't think it's a mistake I think like your intentions you're clearly selflessly putting out information right and you want to help people and that's very clear and I think that's why people it resonates with people cuz it's like this guy just wants to help and spread a positive message um you know I guess is it difficult or do you find it difficult to like pick topics or like stay away from certain things or how's I guess in general how's the journey been because you said you started social media this year yeah and you're in the millions of followers now yeah it's got to be pretty incredible well first of all thank you that's an incredible compliment because I feel the same about the way that that you present information and the content that you put out I mean I think you know we're kind of all on a similar path yeah you know it I look at it as like spokes in the wheel like it takes all the spokes to make that wheel turn and we all come with a little different perspective a little different space or whatever whatever it may be and this has
whatever whatever it may be and this has been obviously at least on the surface a fairly natural jump to get to one people you know heart disease is number one killer in this country people are very interested in it and so it it wasn't necessarily hard to kind of step out but even in the short period of time that we've been doing it clearly content becomes cumbersome MH you know every weekend um but we've gotten better at it you know my son Max is really The Mastermind behind all this I give him awesome really the majority of the credit for our success because these were all Uncharted head headwinds for me like I was the guy at a party if someone took my picture I would go grab the cell phone and tell them I was in the witness protection program like delete the and like delete the photo right yeah I was like oh no dude like not state federal I got it's got to go and so for me to be kind of public facing at this time is like I really can't even wrap my head around it but really what continues to motivate me is exactly what you touched on it's like I really feel like I'm proud of the information and the content and we get a lot of feedback from people that have really been helped by it and like I don't really need anything else you know and and we were talking about
you know and and we were talking about this earlier but for me over 25 years like I could take care of one patient at a time I'm not in any kind of scalable model or anything and this is allowed me to really scale with information that I function with every single day yeah and so it's been wild man I love being a beginner yeah really at anything like you know maybe even like hip-hop dancing one day or something that might be something that story for another day yeah okay we uh you know what's cool is um you know I think a big knock on like Western medicine would probably be like you're you know you're cardiac surgeon so you're kind of like see a nail and hit it like you're you know that's you're so hyperfocused on that sure but what's cool I think is like you are so invested in learning and and you know doing proactive stuff and more you know Innovative stuff and lifestyle changes which is actually taking away from your business if you think about it which is fun with me right which is awesome and I think that's what people gravitate towards it because it's so genuine but like um um you could see how like you I think doctors they get a really hard like people are really judgmental when they don't understand like you're doing that every day so it would make sense that you became laser focused on doing this singular thing it's probably really hard to stay up with everything coming out like cuz people look at you and also expect he's a doc he should know sure the entire body so that balance it's just I think it's it's awesome the way you approach
it's it's awesome the way you approach content because it's like you look at it as the entire body and not just just what you're doing every single day yeah and I kind of it's interesting cuz after about 10 years in practice I kind of came to this Crossroad where I really felt like I was functioning in this Arena of you know it was like um I don't know the right word right now because it's almost like a system you yeah well my the heat just went out my left ear but you know I'm going to blame it on all the stff I really felt like it was an extra exercise and futility because I was treating the endgame of all these folks and they'd come in dock fix me and I'd see them back and they'd be smoking again yeah you know and there's really not a lot you can do with it and I really became disenchanted with like you said getting up every morning and fighting the fight right I mean I realized that we were not really on a path that made really good sense and so at that point I got interested in the functional medicine piece I went through the ifm course I became friends with Alejandro younger with clean we did his program it changed our lives like big time oh man and I was like it's kind of like reading a good book or seeing a movie like you want to share it yeah yeah with people like I want to tell more people about this and you know as you point out like none of these things happen in a vacuum now obviously I'm not a health I'm not a strength and conditioning coach I'm not a nutritionist but I do understand the
nutritionist but I do understand the basic principles and my goal is not necessarily to be an expert but to try to help folks as they're drinking out of this Fire H of information to get my perspective and look sometimes I'm wrong I mean I make mistakes and go back and go yeah maybe that wasn't exactly the right course to take I mean just like medical information right like when I was a a resident in general surgery we used to whack out half the stomach one minute left no yeah so so on that same breath if you had to change or you could change one thing about the medical system yeah you could make any change you wanted but it had to be a singular change what would you change yeah it's easy actually that we need to refocus the patient as our central theme that's what's lost yeah that's it like I mean it's that simple like everybody goes well yeah of course but it's not happening right you know if you look at the medical industry and it's made up of kind of hospitals and Physicians the insurance companies and Industry well sitting on that St stool is supposed to be a patient yeah it's been flipped upside down we got 10 seconds cool all right you made it yeah bro you cressed that I'm down it's light work yeah got a strong heart all right we pop out you ready three two one after you cheers thanks for having me brother I really
thanks for having me brother I really enjoyed it that's what I'm talking [Music] [Music] about all right Dr Jimmy London you beat the heat congrats probably the the um best trophy you've ever received the golden lad award it's uh 24 car it's the only trophy I've ever received how about that thanks for being here man Dr Jeremy London who do you want to see next try and beat the heat first on the list Eric Henman can't wait for that one Ken write out it's your time brother and finally Frank Grillo and I'll make the trip back to be here with you
