A running recovery study found that hot and cold immersion changed select recovery signals, but did not improve force, jump performance, mood, or perceived fatigue. What the Study Tested
Recovery becomes clearer when the stress is specific. This study compared cold-water immersion at 11°C, hot-water immersion at 41°C, and a placebo condition after demanding running work. The design matters because contrast therapy is often discussed as one broad ritual, when the body responds to temperature through more precise signals.
The runners completed one of two protocols. One group performed continuous running at the velocity linked with the respiratory compensation point. The other completed intermittent running at 50% above that point, a sharper high-intensity stress. Both formats challenged recovery, but they did not ask the same thing of the system.
Measurements were taken at baseline, immediately after exercise, then again 2, 4, and 24 hours later. The researchers looked beyond a single performance score. They assessed voluntary and evoked knee-extensor contractions, countermovement jumps, mood state, cardiac autonomic modulation, oxygen cost during brief submaximal runs, and perceptual responses.
That range gives the paper its value. Recovery is not one number. You can regain composure in one system while another still holds fatigue. A precise protocol respects that distinction.
Performance Did Not Shift
The clearest finding is also the most useful restraint. Neither cold nor hot immersion improved the main performance and perceived fatigability markers compared with placebo. Knee-extensor peak force did not show a clear lift after either immersion protocol, whether measured through voluntary effort or evoked contractions.
Countermovement jump performance also failed to separate meaningfully from placebo. Mood disturbance and perceptual responses followed the same pattern. The body may feel held by a ritual, but this paper did not show a broad improvement in force, jump output, mood, or perceived fatigue within the tested window.
This is not a dismissal of temperature work. It is a precision finding. Better recovery signals do not automatically become better performance in the next 24 hours. When you choose hot or cold, the question is not simply whether it works. The sharper question is what signal you want to support.
Where Recovery Signals Improved
The study did find meaningful movement in recovery markers. Cold-water immersion increased cardiac vagal modulation 2 hours after exercise. In plain terms, that signal reflects the heart's return toward a quieter rhythm after stress, a sign that the system is settling into recovery and calm.
Hot-water immersion changed a different measure. It reduced oxygen consumption during brief submaximal runs within 24 hours after exercise. That suggests the same easy running demand required less oxygen after the hot protocol, pointing toward smoother cardiorespiratory recovery rather than a guaranteed speed benefit.

These outcomes refine the ritual. Cold appeared more connected to short-term cardiac recovery. Heat appeared more connected to the oxygen cost of subsequent submaximal work. Both signals matter, but neither should be mistaken for universal performance readiness.
Protocol Matters
The most practical layer sits in the muscle activation data. Both temperatures improved vastus lateralis activation during maximal voluntary contractions, but not in the same context. Heat increased this activation marker 2 and 4 hours after continuous running at the respiratory compensation point.
Cold increased the same marker 2 and 4 hours after high-intensity intermittent running at 50% above that point. The pairing matters. A steady endurance stress and an intermittent high-intensity stress did not align with the same recovery tool, even when the measured muscle signal was similar.
That is the lesson to carry into practice. Choose the recovery ritual by the stress that came before and the signal you want next. Hot versus cold is too blunt. The better protocol is deliberate, specific, and anchored in the recovery you are trying to restore.
